Check them out with the Registry Trust to see if they have any county court judgements (CCJ's) against them. They have records of fines, judgements and court orders for unpaid debts dating back over six years. This doesn't actually guarantee that the tradesman is currently solvent, but it will show that they haven't had any debts in the past.

Don't make large sums upfront, its far better to make a deposit at commencement of work and then at several stages through the project.

Paying by credit card allows you to make a claim against the credit card company for sums of between £100 and £30,000. Also use your card to pay for building materials rather than allowing the builder to buy them. You may have to forfeit a trade discount but will be protected in the event that the builders merchant lets you down.
